Maternity Photoshoot
How to create timeless photos from the comfort of your own home
As a family and couples photographer in Southeastern Minnesota, I wanted to try creating my own maternity photos. With a little help from my husband, I was able to create my dream maternity photos from the comfort of my own home! Read on to learn more about the process.
Step 01
camera settings & Direct the shooteR.
Every photographer knows that natural light plays an important role in documenting special memories. Make sure you are in a room with plenty of natural light- my living room at home has large, nearly floor-to-ceiling windows which allowed lots of light to pour in. I also did my session when the sun was going to be shining/directing into the room.
Step 02
Lighting is EVERYTHING.
Next, I dialed in my camera settings for my husband. I reset the settings any time we moved somewhere else in the room because the light and shadows continued to change. Additionally, I showed him inspiration pictures of how I wanted my photos to look- this helped him understand where he needed to stand in order to get specific angles while not forcing me to continue directing him the entire time. This resulted in very natural, candid photos between my son and I!
Step 03
EDIT.
Even with dialing in the camera settings, there was still lots of post-session editing work that needed to be done. There were times when my husband struggled with shadows, but I was able to recover the photos with my editing work.
